A different love story for idealism-lovers. I think that’s the most suitable words to describe this novel. If you are wondering why i have chosen those words , it is because the author has brought a different taste in her novel. The writing on the cover of the book said that this novel is an idealism taste-booster up novel. Ya, in this novel, Afra was trying to boosting-up idealism, as you can see in her way describing the setting, detailed, illustrated precisely the setting in that era, which is really make us feel like in the middle 19th century, when the Dutch colonized Indonesia. Afra has proven her ability in making an innovation, developing something from most romantic novel did--always serving the same main problems, and finally : happy ending-- and practically being outstanding successfully. Moreover, Afra has found her own way to attract the readers until the end of the stories, something that most of the thick books did not have. In addition, the story consisting of some important values, that have been forgotten today. Just like the citizen’s responsibility to build their country, no matter how long you are out of the country; the children’s duty to obey their parents; and more societal values you can get. Afra illustrated the characters strongly, that makes the story more interesting.
Besides,  in order  to create that era’s circumstances, Afra used Javanese language and deutch in some dialogues, that may confusing some readers who do not understand these language. Because in some cases, the dialogue contains important parts of the story. While there is not any footnote or translation in this novel.
De Winst consists of twenty two chapters, which is enlighten the story about Rangga, one of the empire relatives-Indonesian student who was study in Holland, and his life after go back from Holland. In his way back home, he met Everdine Kareen Spinoza, a beautiful woman from Holland. And instantly, Rangga fell in love with her. Unfortunately, Rangga has been matched with his cousin, Sekar. Sekar was different with other women at that time, she grew as a brave girl, and againts the colonials apparently. At that era, in Java’s tradition, the elder’s command was very sacred, that you have to admit it, eventhough it is contradicted with your opinion. The story also illustrated the situation of Indonesia in that era, where the natural resource was controlled by the foreigner, as some of the inlander was began trying to take over the foreigner’s place, because the foreigner always treat Indonesian people rudely. And Rangga, as one of the educated inlander, directly being a willing to make it comes true. In this part, Afra illustrated Rangga’s personal conflict, among his engagement plan, then his feeling with Kareen, his responsibility as an educated inlander to create a good condition for Indonesian labours in the sugarcan factory where he works. Then the complexities,  tragedies, and betrayals has made the situation uncontrollabe. The story goes fast, as Afra used to be surprising the readers by unpredictable plot. And then the story became complicated, but believe me, this novel will makes you curious.
Disappointingly, the end of the story will not satisfy the readers. Afra made it the end of the story look common, and made a bad impression at the end. But do not worry about it, because this is the first novel from four. The end of this novel is the beginning of the second novel. If you do not satisfy with the end, you can read the rest novel. This novel is appropriate for you who are searching for different tasted novel without loosing the sense of a good novel. Primary for you idealism lovers. This novel will bring you back to the middle 20th century, and will give you detailed illustration about the setting of that era.

*the review of the second book is coming soon!
